A Parent-Friendly Guide for Stress-Free and Joyful Portraits

Family photo sessions are a beautiful way to capture your family’s personality, connection, and love — but if you’re a parent, you know that getting kids to cooperate for pictures can sometimes feel like a mission impossible.

As a family photographer in Woodbury, MN, I’ve worked with kids of all ages (and energy levels!) and discovered that a little preparation goes a long way toward creating a relaxed, fun experience for everyone.

Here are my best tips to help your children feel happy, comfortable, and ready to shine in front of the camera:

1. Set the Tone Early

Kids feed off your energy. If you’re calm, cheerful, and excited about the session, they’ll be more likely to follow your lead.

Instead of saying, “We have to take pictures,” try saying, “We’re going to have fun playing and laughing together while someone takes our pictures.”

2. Choose the Right Time of Day

Schedule your session when your kids are usually at their best — well-rested and not hungry.

For outdoor sessions, I recommend late afternoon or early evening for the soft golden light, but we’ll work together to find the perfect time for your family’s routine.

3. Bring Comfort Items

A favorite toy, blanket, or small snack can work wonders in helping a child relax. We can even incorporate a meaningful item into a few shots for a personal touch.

4. Dress for Comfort and Style

Coordinating outfits look beautiful, but comfort is key — itchy tags, stiff collars, or uncomfortable shoes can lead to frowns instead of smiles.

Neutral tones and soft fabrics photograph beautifully, and layers or accessories can add texture without being distracting.

5. Keep Expectations Realistic

Kids are wonderfully unpredictable — and that’s part of their charm!

The goal isn’t perfect stillness, it’s genuine smiles, cuddles, and playful moments. I’ll guide your family through poses and activities that feel natural and keep the session moving at your child’s pace.

6. Make it a Game

I often use prompts, silly jokes, and movement-based activities to keep kids engaged. From “walk and giggle” shots to “tickle attacks,” making it fun helps capture authentic joy.

7. Trust Your Photographer

As a family photographer, I specialize in creating a safe, relaxed space where your children can be themselves. My sessions are designed to capture your family’s real connection — so all you need to do is show up and enjoy the moment.
